The Rizal Shrine in Calamba Laguna, is the homeland of José Rizal Philippines national hero, it its one of most frequented historic and tourist sites in Laguna. An average of 270,000 tourist visit the shrine yearly. According to the (NHI) National Historical Institute. And it it’s a reproduction of the original 2 story, Spanish Colonial style house in Calamba, where José Rizal was born June 19, 1861. The Rizal Shrine is located along Rizal Street and Mercado Street in Calamba Poblacion.
The Rizal Shrine is a reminiscent of a upper class Filipino home built during the Spanish Colonial era. The lower part portion is made of brick and adobe stone, and the upper part portion is made of hardwood. The sliding windows is made on capiz sheels, the exterior wall were painted in green the original color is (white) and the roof is contructed of red ceramic tile.
José Rizal father, Francisco Mercado, took 2 years to manufacture the original Rizal’s ancestral house. The Spanish Authorities confiscated the house in 1891. Rizal Paciano the brother of José Rizal, taken upthe house during the Philippine Revolution, but it is lost again to the friars.
The present museum/house is just a duplication of the original ancestral house of José Rizal family, the old house has been destroyed during the Worl War II, the government bought the remained of the Rizal House for about P24,000. It was President Elpidio Quirino who ordered to reconstruct the national hero’s home through the supervision of National Architect/Artist Juan Nakpil and it begins in 1950.
The only surviving features in the Spanish Colonial house is the deep weel that becomes a “wishing well” for visitors and tourist. In addition, the parents of José Rizal (Teodora Alonzo and Francisco Mercado) is buried near the narra tree for about twenty meters away from the “wishing well.”

If you are commuting from Manila, ride a bus in buendia going Sta.Cruz. Then get off at Calamba City near Chowking where the tricycle terminal. Ride a Tricycle and tll the driver to take you in Rizal Shrine.
