Theres some things we love more than potato. You can make potatoes into SO MANY amazing dishes, their posibilities are endless. But there is one downside of the potato we all know and love, they have to be kept in very certain environment.
We all heard that the potato have kept somewhere dry and dark but what is the big deal right? Keeping the potatoes somewhere bright or damp wont affect the flavor.
When you keep the potatoes somewhere too warm or too moist, you are probably seen what happens, they tend to sprout and even turn in a little green. While you can chop off those sprouted area, it maybe best to toss that potatoes all together. Why? its because it becomes built up with poison called SOLANINE.
Solanine can be found in potatoes when the root veggie is been kept in the wrong place for too long, like we said somewhere warm, wet, or bright is BAD. If consumed, this solanine can make you extremely sick and can be fatal.
The New York Times reported that 100 pound person would have to eat 16oz of green potatoes to get truly sick. That is about one full bake potato. So taking a 1 littble bite, while not encouraged, it should not harm you.
It make sense, then, that most death by solanine happen during famine, when people are forced to eat anything they can just to avoid starving, even if it is green potato.
According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. you will know you igested too much solanine after consuming a potato if you experience drowsiness and stomach pain. They also suggest that you can peel a green potatoes and eat the parts that are NOT green, but if the potato tasete bitter, throw it out immediately.
