Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte boasts of personally killing a suspects while serving as mayor of Davao City. The December 12 admission was not Duterte’s first. While addressing his country war on drugs, which has garnered international criticism. Duterte said this “ in Davao I used to do it personally. Just to show to the guys that if I can do it, why can’t you?”Duterte went on to say that, while mayor, he would ride motorcycle around Davao City “..looking for confrontation so I could kill.”
He also addressed criticism from United States President Barack Obama, who cited human rights law as a reason to curb extrajudicial killing, saying, “I am not about to do that.”
While Duterte has previously mentioned similar instances of extrajudicial killing, this is the first time he’s said such things since becoming President of the Philippines.
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre says Duterte “exaggerated.”
