More than a 100 workers are injured as a massive fire tears through a factory in the Cavite Economic Zone. A fire broke out on the second floor of Japanese operated House Technology Industries around 6pm February 1.
Initial reports suggest a machine malfunction is to blame. The company, which manufactures housing materials, employs some 6,000 people. Its unclear how many were in the building at the time of the fire. Officials are still working to determine if anyone is missing.
Cavite Governor Jesus Crispin Remulla told local news agencies a number of those injured are in critical condition, some with third degree burns covering 70 to 90 percent of their bodies. Remulla puts damage costs at 5 billion pesos. The Philippine Economic Zone Authority will investigate the Japanese firm running the factory to determine whether there were any lapse in fire safety measures.
