Devastating loss for thousands of Filipino Families as a massive fire rages through a shanty neighborhood in Manila’s port area. The fire broke out during the night of Tuesday, Feb. 8 and quickly spread across Parola Compound in Tondo, Destroying at least 1,000 homes and causing an estimated 6 million pesos in damages. Sr. Superintendent Wilberto Tiu, Chief of the Bureau of Fire Protection-NCR, told ABS-CBN that the fire injured seven people. Officials say 3,000 people lost their homes in the blaze. Firefighters weren’t able to completely put out the fire until early Thursday morning. Media reported residents took shelter at nearby compounds and a makeshift evacuation center, but many were left on the streets with belongings they were able to salvage. An initial investigation shows the fire may have been sparked by faulty electric wiring or unattended gas stove.
