South Korea government is giving the Philippines a secondhand warship for just ₱5000. Department of National Defense (DND) Spokesman Arsenio Andolong said April 27, “It will definitely enhance our capability to patrol our waters and perform counter-terrorism missions.” It’s a Pohang-class warship, equipped with anti-sub, anti-ship and anti-air weapons system. While the Philippines is getting the ship for very cheap, it will have to pay for refurbishments.
The Philippines Star says the Department of National Defense may spend around 200 million pesos to make the warship ready for combat. Andolong said South Korea may give the Philippines up to 2 more warships, because South Korea is replacing its fleet. Reuters says South Korea government donated two fighter jets to the Philippines earlier this week, and two more will be delivered next month.
