Balita Ngayon| The Philippines Commission on Higher Education approved the request of 268 colleges and universities to increase tuition and fees. The commission announced its approval which will apply to the 2017-2018 academic year in a statement on May 29. The affected institutions represent 16 percent of the total of around 1,600 private higher education institutions in the Philippines according to the commission.
The commission says the average tuition increase across the affected institutions will be 6.69%. Speaking to the Philippine Star, a spokesman for the National Union of Students of the Philippines accused President Duterte of reneging on his promise of affordable education. However the commission said it has adhered to processes that make tuition and fees transparent, reasonable and affordable.
