A Saudi singer has been arrested for dabbing during concert. The dab is a popular dance move that took the world by storm in 2015. Abdallah Al Shaharani was performing at a music festival in the city of Taif on Aug. 7, when he dabbed in front of audience. While Shaharani may have just been trying to have fun, dabbing is actually banned in conservative Saudi Arabia.
The country’s National Committee for Narcotics Control has outlawed the dance move because it believes it’s associated with drugs use. The secretay-general for the committee told Okaz newspaper that dabbing is “contrary to the national strategy to combat drugs.”
A poster published by the Saudi interior ministry warns of the “dangers” dabbing can have on society. Shaharani tweeted Tuesday, “I am most apologetic to our honorable government and my dear president for the spontaneous movement.”
